Histopathology
Histopathology is a vital field in veterinary medicine where tissues are examined under a microscope for any deviations from the norm e.g. unexplained cysts.
The process of preparing tissue samples for histopathological examination involves several steps. First, the tissue samples are fixed in a solution to preserve their structure e.g. Formalin. Then, they are embedded in paraffin wax to make them easier to handle and cut into thin sections. Next, the tissue sections are mounted on glass slides and stained using special dyes to highlight different cellular structures and abnormalities.
Histopathologists carefully examine these stained tissue sections under a microscope to identify any abnormal changes, such as inflammation, infection, or cancerous growths. By studying the cellular characteristics and organisation of tissues, valuable information is gained to help with diagnosis.
Taking tissue samples for histopathology is essential for diagnosing a wide range of conditions, including cancer, infections, inflammatory diseases, and autoimmune disorders.
